Ceramides are a family of lipid molecules which are found in the outer, protective layer of skin called the stratum corneum. Also commonly referred to as the “moisture barrier” on Asian Beauty sites, the stratum corneum protects the skin from environmental irritants and serves a waterproof barrier trapping water molecules which keep skin hydrated.
Ceramides are an extremely popular ingredient in both Asian and Western skincare products and have been shown to do the following:
- Increase skin hydration
- Improve wrinkles
- Decrease skin irritation
