Today I’ll be reviewing the Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect Cleansing Oil. I purchased this nearly a year ago and haven’t bothered reviewing it until now because I kept forgetting about it. I suppose that’s the best way to summarize this product – it works, but it’s pretty forgettable.

In addition to a bunch of different kinds of oils, one of the main ingredients in this product is black sugar extract. According to the Skinfood website, the “black sugar” is actually a dark brown sugar which gets its color from molasses. Unlike most commercial brown sugar, the sugar Skinfood uses is unrefined, thereby retaining more nutrients.
Sugar in its granule form is a natural exfoliant. In addition, it’s also a humectant, which is a type of moisturizer. While the Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect Cleansing Oil has no sugar granules, we can still benefit from its cleaning and moisturizing properties.
Product Description
The Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect Cleansing Oil comes in a large plastic pump bottle that is quite pretty, but can be messy if you’re not careful. To prevent this, I basically pump some oil into a Daiso travel-sized dropper bottle and refill as needed.
Since this was my first oil cleanser, I didn’t know what to expect. Having avoided oil on my face for most of my life due to fear of breakouts, the only oil products in my home prior to this were cooking oils. Hence, I was rather surprised by this cleansing oil’s thin, watery texture. However, the product thickened when emulsified by water, creating a creamy cleanser.
In terms of scent, the Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect Cleansing Oil smells like a mixture of lemons and herbs. It actually reminds me of Ricola and Halls cough drops. The scent probably isn’t for everyone, but I don’t mind it too much.
My Experience
I use the Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect Cleansing Oil as the very first step in my skincare routine. What I do is keep a travel bottle in the shower and apply product with a dry hand while the shower is warming up. Once in the shower, I add water to my face to emulsify the oil into a creamy cleanser.
After using this product for two weeks, I stopped using it for several months because I didn’t really notice a difference in my skin. Eventually, I started using it on days when I wore makeup just so I could finish the bottle and move on to something else. While this cleansing oil works well enough, it doesn’t always seem to remove all my eye makeup. Here are photos of a test I did with some of my longer lasting makeup products:
Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect Cleansing Oil: Final Thoughts
The Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect Cleansing Oil works as advertised for cleaning and moisturizing the skin. It’s an adequate cleansing oil, but other than that, it’s just not that memorable.
